Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Issues Memorandum, “Requirement to Reduce Legionella Risk in Healthcare Facility Water Systems to Prevent Cases and Outbreaks of Legionnaires’ Disease (LD)”
In this memo, CMS has outlined their Legionella control expectations for those healthcare facilities certified by Medicare.
CMS is requiring facilities receiving Medicare funding to make positive steps towards maintaining at risk building water systems by developing and adhering to policies and procedures that inhibit microbial growth in complex building water systems.
Compliance will be determined by CMS surveyors’ review of policies, procedures, and reports documenting proper water management implementation results.
